BCBS, City of Boston provide free Bluebikes unlock credit during Red Line closure

Special to the Sun

Blue Cross Blue Shield of Massachusetts (“Blue Cross”) and the City of Boston are teaming up to offer Bluebikes unlock codes, providing an alternative transportation option for those affected by the MBTA Red Line closure.

Residents can redeem free unlocks for both classic bikes and electric bikes (ebikes) throughout the closure. Each unlock code provides five free 30-minute rides on classic Bluebikes. Riders can also unlock ebikes, though a per-minute charge will apply after the initial unlock. The free unlocks are available only during the closure period and while supplies last.

Blue Cross is the title sponsor of Bluebikes, a bike-share program that serves as public transportation by bike across 13 municipalities in eastern Massachusetts, including Boston, Cambridge, and Somerville. The system is municipally owned and operated under contract by Lyft.

Dates of Offer: Tuesday, November 5 to Sunday, November 10, 2024

How to Redeem: Non-members can access the free unlocks by using code MBTAREDNOV in the rewards section of the Bluebikes app. The credits are valid across the system’s service area, including Arlington, Boston, Brookline, Cambridge, Chelsea, Everett, Malden, Medford, Newton, Revere, Salem, Somerville, and Watertown.
