Newbury Street League celebrating 45 years

Dear Editor:

This year, the Newbury Street League will celebrate its 45th Anniversary!  Our Mission is to Beautify & Maintain Newbury Street and to market and promote our member businesses.

Our very unique and charming Newbury Street is what draws locals as well as visitors from around the world to our great street.  It is our goal to be included on the list of “Must Sees” along with those such as Via Veneto in Rome, Champs Elyse in Paris, Worth Avenue in Palm Beach & more!  To that end, we need to be at the top of our game when it comes to aesthetics such as Trees, Trash, Sidewalks, Street Lighting, Cleanliness etc.  We work with the City of Boston on these issues that require constant attention & maintenance in order that Newbury Street maintains its place on that list.

We work with and support the Back Bay Architectural Commission re: Signage, Window Displays, Entrances for our shops that will maintain the historic charm of our buildings yet allow our retail shops what is needed to thrive and prosper.  In 2015 we Honored William Young formerly with the Back Bay Architectural Commission for his 20 years of service in helping us to maintain the beauty while preserving the history that makes Newbury Street what it is today!

The Challenges that retail is facing today are not unique to Newbury Street.  It is a worldwide challenge!  We are working harder than ever to create fun, interesting, experiential street wide events to bring real shoppers to Newbury Street and into our shops.  Last Fall for the first time we celebrated ArtWeek Boston with 23 events that took place during this 10-day festival.   Because of its success, we were included in the Spring Artweek Boston Festival as a Community Collaborator with ArtWeek Boston!  Live Music brings people!  With Mayor Walsh signing of the “Acoustic on Main” program last December, allowing Live Acoustic Musicians to perform in our shops & restaurants without a permit, Boston now joins so many other cities who have proven that Music is an enhancement to business and a great tool to drive people into shops & restaurants!  We are planning a Summer Music series to take advantage of this new ruling that makes it possible and easy to do!  We understand the need to stay on top of trends and to constantly be thinking about “What’s Next” and needed, to be at the top of our game!

Our members are a combination of all types of businesses from many segments such as Retail, Art, Beauty, Restaurants & more!  We appreciate the variety they offer that makes Newbury Street interesting and allows for something for everyone from everywhere!  Our slogan is that we are “The World on a Street”!  We couldn’t do it without their ongoing support, participation and appreciation of our efforts.  Along with that, we have many very long time landlords as members who also appreciate our efforts in marketing for their tenants along with our efforts in maintaining the aesthetic that makes Newbury Street what it has been, is and will continue to be for many years to come!  To all of our great neighbors, businesses, landlords and partners who help and support our efforts….Thank you!  We couldn’t do it without you!

Michele Messino,

Executive Director
Newbury Street League
