Once fierce rivals in the 1980s for the office of mayor of Boston, Mel “Hugs” King gets a hug from former Mayor Ray Flynn while both of their families look on. The moment came during a ceremony at the McKinley South End Academy on Friday, Oct. 20, where students and city leaders celebrated King’s 89th birthday and named the McKinley gym after him. King has forged a strong bond between himself and the students in recent years, with them honoring him with a mural on their building last summer.
