Jose M. Rodriguez can attest that pole climbing is a greasy, dirty job – something everyone came to find out during the annual Festival Betances Greased Pole Climbing Contest on Sunday, July 16. The contest has been going on for decades alongside the Festival, but this year, no one was able to capture the flags from the top of the pole after several attempts. The Festival Betances, put on by IBA Boston in the South End, took place July 15 and 16 and included everything from music to food to dominos to greasy poles.
